As better ways of producing energy and lighting solutions are becoming more advanced, our industry is moving towards a more environmentally sustainable future with two key legislative changes coming into force from February 2023.
Stage 2 of the Single Lighting Regulation
Updated Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive Single Lighting Regulations (EU) 2019/2020 & Energy Label Regulations RoHS. In September 2021 the new Single Lighting Regulations (SLR) (EU) 2019/2020.
This encompasses all available lighting technologies. A higher performance threshold for light sources and phasing out of non-compliant lighting technologies. The regulations indicate a staged process for the phase-out of technologies impacted by higher thresholds as stage one came into force on 1st September 2021. The second stage is due to come into force 1st September 2023 and includes the following lamps:
- Halogen capsules
- T8 Fluorescent lamps (600mm, 1000mm & 1500mm).
This includes The Energy Label Regulation (ELR) which recalibrated the energy rating scale that is displayed on the packaging to show a wider scope of efficiency performance. Over the last few years, the present RoHS exceptions relating to mercury-containing lamps have been the subject of a review process. Since discharge lamps do not function without mercury, they are currently listed as exceptions under the current RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU). On the 24th February 2022, the delegated acts were published in the Official Journal and therefore current exceptions for fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps will expire in the following 12–18 months, with only T9 circular, high-pressure sodium and special application lamps receiving a further extension.

Moving from traditional Fluorescents to LED
The high level of technology in newer LED lamps means you can replace old technology with the latest LED retrofit lamps for general and commercial lighting needs, this will maintain the light level and comfort you or your customers are used to with an added bonus on larger energy savings. Switching to LED lamps offers many advantages:
- LED lamps match the shape and size of a fluorescent lamp, ensuring they fit current units without having to replace the whole installation
- No rewiring is required as they are an easy and safe replacement for fluorescent tubes
- Available in popular T8 and T5 lengths with a wide range of lumen options
- LED lamps last 3 times longer than standard fluorescent tri-phosphor lamps, giving you up to 50,000 hours average rated lifetime and an average of 66% energy saving compared to fluorescent tubes
- Available in 3000K, 4000K and 6500K colour temperatures, C to F energy class, offering up to 90% energy savings
- Comes with up to 5 years standard warranty, for complete peace of mind
- Ideal for factories, car parks, supermarkets, department stores, schools, offices and domestic settings
