The future of halogen lighting

In June, the Government published that Halogen light lamps would be banned from September 2021 with a month transition period and fluorescent lights from September 2023. The phasing out was started back in 2018 with the sale of higher energy halogen lamps.

The initiative on one side of the spectrum is to save energy bills for consumers whilst at the other end its to support the governments environment agenda to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions.

Energy Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, said: “We’re phasing out old inefficient halogen lamps for good, so we can move more quickly to longer lasting LED lamps, meaning less waste and a brighter and cleaner future for the UK. (Source: Gov.uk)”

After the 1st October, the following lamps cannot be put onto market:

  • Self-ballasted Compact Fluorescent retrofit lamps (caps B22, E27 etc)
  • Linear Halogen R7s lamps over 2,700 lumens
  • 12V Halogen reflectors lamps (MR11/GU4, MR16/GU5.3 etc)
  • Lower performing LED lamps

From the 1st September 2023 these lamps cannot be put on the market:

  • Linear fluorescent lamps T8 2 foot, 4 foot, 5 foot
  • Mains voltage Halogen capsules with G9 cap
  • 12V Halogen capsules with G4/GY6.35 cap

Note: there are several exemptions for specialist lamps and applications. It is also important to acknowledge that the term ‘cannot be placed on the market’ means that existing stock in suppliers warehouses can be sold though new stock cannot be introduced. As such, Tezelec will continue to supply these lamps until our stock finishes.

What makes the LED lamps an ideal replacement for Halogen lamps?

Reduced running costs

Electric consumption is a fraction in contrast to halogen and consequently changing an entire house or business premise with LED lamps a significant saving is to be made! Philips have a calculator on their website that you can use to estimate your savings, click here to learn more.

LED last longer

LEDs tend to last longer than halogen lamps, meaning they’ll save you money on replacements over time. Where a halogen lasts around 2,000 hours an LED equivalent can last up to 10,000 hours.

LEDs are brighter

One of their most obvious benefits is increased brightness. How much brighter? Well, it varies between models and manufacturers, but in general, LEDs are about five times as bright as incandescent lamps and two or three times as bright as halogen light lamps.

Previously brightness was connected to wattage however with the introduction of LED lamps and their energy efficiency, this is no longer an accurate measure but instead Lumens (or light output) is a better measure. Lumens provide an objective measure of how bright a lamp is.

Given the energy efficiency of LED lamps, a 40 watt LED lamp will be much brighter than a 40 watt halogen lamp.

LEDs don’t get hot

One of the main complaints about halogen lamps is that they get hot, which isn’t always convenient or safe. LEDs, on the other hand, emit virtually no heat, so you can put them pretty much anywhere in your home and not worry about singed fingers or scorched surfaces.

LED lighting comes in many shapes and sizes

From floods and spots to searchlights, under-cabinet lights, desk lamps, and reading lights and the popular light strips. LED lighting is also available in a vast range of colours and sizes which can be used as mood lighting or task lighting.

In short, switching from halogen lamps to LEDs helps with cost efficiency, durability (LEDs last longer than halogens), safety (they produce less heat), energy efficiency (they use less energy than halogens) and innovative design.

At Tezelec we provide local electricians and house owners with LED lighting solutions, that ranges from replacing lamps around the house through to a complete Smart LED lighting solution that can be controlled remotely and using a mobile device.
